The "Oliver!" Online Souvenir Book

~ The Story in Brief ~

Oliver Twist, a foundling, dares to ask for more gruel fed to the boys in the workhouse and, as a reprisal, is sold by the Parish Beadle Mr. Bumble to an undertaker as an apprentice. Finally fleeing away, Oliver reaches London and is befriended by a cheeky street urchin known as The Artful Dodger and Fagin, master pickpocket and receiver of stolen property. Oliver learns to pick pockets and is sent out to try his luck-but is falsely accused before he can even start, chased, captured, and hauled before a magistrate. On learning the true facts, his accuser, Mr. Brownlow, is conscience-stricken and, to recompense the boy, takes him in...

Meanwhile, Fagin, the cruel Bill Sikes and his girl, Nancy, fear that Oliver may betray them and they lure the boy back. Mr. Brownlow is distraught especially as he now believes Oliver is his niece's son. Oliver is helped by Nancy to break away from Bill Sikes, but is recaptured and Nancy is brutally bludgeoned to death. Oliver and the murderer, perused by a crowd that includes Mr. Brownlow, take to the roof tops of London. Bill Sikes falls to his death after being shot by a Police Officer and Oliver is finally reunited with his kindly benefactor. Fagin and The Artful Dodger melt away from the crowd to pursue their happy lives of petty villainy...
